Eleuthera
We are heading south to Eleuthera! Weather has passed and we are looking forward to visitors so we finally get to leave the dock again. We spend the first night anchored near Lynyard Cay. The weather and seas for our crossing to Eleuthera are calm so we meander our way down the coast of Great Abaco Island dragging a fishing line. We catch our first fish in the first 10 minutes and it’s a little Skip Jack tuna that we throw back. We catch 2 more and keep one for dinner. We’re not avid fishermen, but it’s fun to catch dinner and reap the bounty of the sea.
Our destination is Royal Island which has a beautiful protected anchorage with about 6 other boats at anchor. We get settled and John cleans our fish. A huge barracuda appears out of nowhere to clean up the fish scraps and it’s fun to watch him glide in to snap them up. Yum for him and us!!
Royal Island is home to the ruins of and old mansion so we do some hiking to explore. It really looks like it was an amazing place in it’s heyday. There is a beach with a protected lagoon on the far side that looks like it was part of the mansion property. There are also the remains of a now abandoned golf resort project.
Filleting the tuna and our Barracuda escort.
