North Shroud Cay Creek

Tender ride up the creek

Today we headed North from Wardrick Wells to Shroud Cay with Jim and Michele Rubeor. Easy passage up the Exumas today. It was beautiful day with Klaus and Helena on “Lusea”, a Halberg Rassy 46 heading the same way. We got some great video of them and they returned the favor. See the video of MY Elizabeth Anne in the sidebar. We anchored in about 6 1/2 feet of water at low tide near the north creek on Shroud Cay.

Friends Klaus and Helena on LuSea.

Klaus and Helena got to Shroud Creek a little later in the day and we took a late afternoon ride up the North Creek. I thought we made a mistake going up the creek at low tide, but the shallow entrance and low water meant we had the creek almost to ourselves. Lots of turtles swimming in the creek, we’ve seen turtles throughout the creeks of the Bahamas, but these were very calm and didn’t scoot off as we approached.

More spectacular was the end of the creek where it meets the open ocean on the East side of the Cay. All the different blues of the Bahamian waters and pure white sand were spectacular. We hike to the top of a hill to Camp Driftwood. Camp Driftwood was built in the 1960’s by a sailor living on his boat in the creek and was later used by the DEA in the 1980’s to spy on aircraft flying in and out of Norman’s Cay which was drug kingpin Carlos Lehder’s headquarters in the Bahamas.

What a glorious afternoon adventure with the Rubeors and “Lusea”. We capped it off with grilled steak and sausages on the Big Green Egg.

This is so much fun following you guys and reliving those days. We loved shroud. Three boats partied off the south creek and did a high speed, midnight dingy run under full moon through the island … came out on north end. Maybe some rum involved.

dear Beth and John! It was such a pleasure to meet you, first at Fernandez resort Cat Island, then at Warderick Wells, followed by luck at awsome Shroud Cay you mentioned, and in cosy Highborne Marina.
We had a really great time together and would like to stay in contact with you both!

Beth and I feel very much the same. We shall keep in touch. You just might have visitors after we visit our kids in London this summer.
